Vocab Words and New Lab

Today in class we talked about the glasses that split up light. We looked at different kinds of lights and tried to find differences between them. Then, still wearing the glasses, we looked through a prism at the light, and only at a certain angle could you see the splitting.
Our homework due today was to find the definitions of the words ray-concave lens. If somebody didn't get all the words then here they are.
Ray: Straight lines of light waves (shown as an arrow)
Regular Reflection: When parallel waves of light hit a flat surface
Diffuse Reflection: When parallel waves of light hit a bumpy surface
Plane Mirror: A flat sheet of glass with a smooth, silvercolored coating on one side
Image: A copy of an object formed by reflected or refracted rays of light
Virtual Image: Upright image that forms where light seems to come from (see in place mirror)
Concave Mirror: Mirror with a flat surface that curves inward
Convex Mirror: Mirror with a flat surface that curves outward
Focal Point: The point which rays parallel to the optical axis meet
Mirage: An image of a distant object caused by the refraction of light.
Lens: A curved piece of glass or other transparent material that is used to refract light.
Convex Lens: A lens that is thicker in the center than at the edges.
Concave Lens: A lens that is thinner in the center than at the edges.
At the end of class, Ms.D gave us all a lab handout that we're going to work on on Monday. It is our homework to read it so that we have an idea of what to do on monday with our 11 o'clock partners. The lab is called Light Behaviors, and we're going to be playing with Mirrors, Lenses, and Prisms.

Light, Colors and Vocabulary

Hello fellow 6th graders and class mates!
THIS is my first scribe post. In class today we colored in our diagrams to show the primary colors of light and paint.
We learned not to mix marker ink cause then you just get a smudge of black and the color you were trying to make. We also talked about which vocabulary we would have to do for honework and the answer is...
ALL THE WAY FROM, RAY - CONVEX LENS, I know its a lot.
We had a lovley time coloring and getting to work on our homework in class.

Karin

And the next scribe is........ NATHAN!!!!!!!

Introduction to Blogger and Blogging

April 19th, 2010 - In today's Science class we took a break from the subject of Light to discuss a new project for the fourth quarter - BLOGGING! We all accepted our invitation to be an author on the blog and looked at our page to see what Ms. D. set up for us.

The directions for this project are as follows:
  • Each person writes a "Scribe Post" - this is a scientific explanation of what happened in class for the day (this entry is the first Scribe post). It must use good spelling, grammar and sentence structure. It should include relevant scientific vocabulary. It should have a good layout - using color, pictures and links that relate to what we are studying. Finally, it should be understandable to someone who was not in class or even to someone who is not in the Sixth Grade Class at all here at AISZ.
  • Each person writes ONE Major Edit Post - this is done in the form of a comment. It comments to someone else's Scribe Post from the class. It discusses their positive aspects and gives suggestions on how to improve their post. PLUS, it gives a link to something that is helpful or improves what has already been written.
  • Each person writes TWO Minor Edit Posts - this is done in the form of a comment. It comments to someone else's Scribe Post (not the same person used for your Major Edit. It comments about the layout, spelling, grammar, etc. of that person's post. It gives both compliments and suggestions on how to improve what they have written. They should be about a paragraph long. They will be graded on spelling, grammar and sentence structure, as well as it what you have written is helpful and complimentary.
We practiced doing Minor Edits on the 7th Grade and 8th Grade Blog. To see their blog pages, please click on the following links.
In order for comments to be seen on other class blogs, they must be moderated by Ms. D. Don't forget to do the word verification step - as that has been a problem for 8th Graders and 7th Graders in the past.

If you have any questions about how to write any of the posts required, or you want to look at how the posts will be graded and how much this project is worth, please click on the link below to Moodle and scroll down to the week of April 19th-25th, 2010.

Moodle (April 19th - 25th)

Hopefully Blogging will be a fun adventure for our class and we will be able to convey to the world what we are learning in 6th Grade Science here at AISZ! Good luck, have fun and drink Pepsi :)

The next Scribe is Karin.

No homework for Wednesday's class.....And now.....back to LIGHT!

Welcome to our new 6th Grade Science Blog here at AISZ. Please feel free to comment on what we have written, although it will need to be approved by our teacher! In these posts we will be writing about what happens during Science class most days and hopefully you will be able to understand what we are writing about. Have fun and remember, feel free to comment!
