Thursday's Class

Hello to everybody!

We did many things in Thursday's science class, we all had to take notes about Gravity, Universal law of Generation, Distance, and Weight, as the following;

Gravity is;

  • A force between all objects in the Universe.
  • It is dependent on mass and distance
  • The closer something is - the stronger is the gravity that pulls it.

There is no gravity, so nothing holds them to the center, which makes them float

Universal law of Gravitation;

  • Isaac Newton thought of it
  • Gravity exists between all objects in the Universe
  • Mass has to be very different to be noticeable
  • An example of the one above is if someone cut his or her arm! The formula for the Universal law of Gravitation is this one.

Mass is;

  • The amount of stuff in an object
  • Measured with the TBB scale (Triple Beam Balance Scale)
  • The units that it is measured in are grams.

This is a Triple Beam Balance, used to measure Newton.

Distance is;

  • The amount of space between two different objects
  • The equipment used to measured it with are rulers, meter sticks, trundle wheels
  • The units it is measured in are meters, kilometers, hectometers, and light-years.

The space in the middle of these two objects is the distance between the objects.

Weight;

  • DOES NOT EQUAL MASS!!!
  • It is the amount of gravitational force on an object
  • It is measured with a spring or force scale
  • The measurement for it is Newton.

This is a spring scale used to measure weight that works when an object is hung on the hook, and shows how much weight the object is, so how much gravitational force is pulling it down.

When we were finished with taking the notes, we had to get out our notebooks if we had taken these notes on the computer, or if we had taken notes in our lab notebook we just had to turn to our clock on the front page to see our lab partner.

In case you forgot, the lab partner was number 11.

So when we knew our partners we paired up and sat beside each other, then Ms.D asked us to take from the front counter a small and a big block of wood, with a hook on it, and a spring scale. She then told us to write the numbers that were on our wooden blocks, on our lab sheet, and to then hook them to the spring scale. When everyone had done so, she told us to free our desks and make the big wooden block go around the table by pulling it with the spring scale, and told us to observe what happened to the measurements on the spring scale but to not write an observation. She then made us do the same thing over again with the small wooden block, and then both together, and with every different try, the scale's measurement was different. We then made sure that we spoke and asked any question we had on the lab paper, and we ran over the instructions and grading. Then we put everything back and she gave us some time to write our Purpose Question, and decide what were the IV, and DV, for this lab according to the purpose question. She then made us write our Hypothesis, but she did not tell us whether the IV and DV were right or wrong, and will only tell us at the end of the lab.

The work we had to do was similar to this;

Purpose Question: What are some of the factors that affect friction pulling a wooden block across different surfaces?

IV: YOUR CHOICE TO FILL IN

DV: YOUR CHOICE TO FILL IN

Hypothesis: YOUR OWN CHOICE TO FILL IN, but to do at LEAST three guesses.

We then put everything back and packed up, she dismissed us and that was the end of the class.

Hope you enjoyed reading my Blog Post,

The next scribe (if there is any) is....DRUM ROLL.........Ben!

Duncans Reflection Post

Throughout this quarter we have done Blogger. I personally haven't liked blogger. I think it is just modernizing for the sake of modernization. I thought that Blogger was just an extra thing to do for homework. Another thing i haven't enjoyed about it was how it was time consuming and took away time from our other homework. Also I thought it was useless updating what happened in that day if people already were in class and saw everything. Comments were also annoying because there wasn't much to comment on and your grade would be dragged if you spelt 1 or 2 things wrong. Also i think that since we have been doing it the grade mattered upon how many things we did that day. For Example Indra's 45 minute class with only testing, there wasn't much to say. Overall i thought blogger was a waste of time and I hope I wont have to do this again. One thing i thought was good though was that we got to put our personal prefrence in. For this final post we were aloud to say anything. And these are my oppninions.

Chiara's Reflection Post

This year we did numerous things.

This year I learned how you make a blog and I really liked it. The best thing that we did in the fourth quater was the blog because it was so fun. When you go and read you were reviewing the things that we did in class. I didn't enjoy writing the comments. But it was a nice thing for the 6 grade science class.

The end of the year is done so have a nice summer!!!!!!!!

Jakub's Reflection

This project has been interesting and boring. it has been interesting because we could read different peoples posts and comment. It has been boring because writting a post takes a lot of time and it also takes a lot of time to upload a picture (on my computer). Some people just left this project for the las minute, but other people started it the minute it started.
Have a great summer vacation everyone and enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Davide's Reflection Post

Hey,

Summer is coming!!!!!!!! School is almost over!!!!!!! But I bet all of you will miss......Blogging!!!
I really liked and enjoyed the blogging project. I liked the fact that we could post comments telling our opinions to my frieneds. I also really liked to post, since I could understand better what we did in class.
At the start, I found it hard to write and explain perfectly what we did in class. When other people posted what we had to do for homework, it was really heplful, and I liked looking at the blogger instead of moodle. Overall, i really liked blogging.
Have a GREAT summer everyone!!!!
Davide

Courtney's Reflection Post

This project was, to me, the most fun project we had all year, including other classes. I loved how I could express myself in the blog I made, and I could understand what I was doing. I don't dislike blogging at all, and I am looking forward to blogging next year. Blogging was a bit unusual at first, but after I learned it seemed pretty easy. Blogging is also very helpful for understanding what we did in class, and it helps with homework. As I said, blogging is very fun, and I am excited on blogging next year.

Karin's Reflection Post

In this exciting quarter of science, I learned how to use the sixth grade blog. This blog was used to tell us, sixth graders, what we did in class and what our homework was.

This was a fun year of science and blogger was very usefull to find out what we did in class if you were absent of to find out your homework.

I enjoyed the blogger project because I got to comment and post and it was really fun. I cant wait to do this next year.
See you next year,
Karin

Nathan's Reflection Post

For the fourth quarter, sixth grade did a blogger project and everybody had to do three comments and a scribe post. And to finish off, we are all doing a reflection post. The blog project wasn't very fun, but I think I am a professional. I didn't like the different types of comments we had to do and I thought it was pointless and boring. The scribe post was annoying because I was the second person to do it. I also had a bad day to blog on because all we did was talk about a new lab.
I'm happy school is almost over and I hope everyone has a great summer!
Nathan :)

Valentina's Reflection Post

I think that this blog was useful because it helped us with our homework and by almost re-teaching our lesson. So that if someone didn't understand it during the class time you could repeat the class at home on the computer.

I also think that it helped get the students more involved in the class and they listened more to be able to explain it better.

I think that this was a challenge that our class took and that they actually passed.

It was helpful because it also made sure that someone else found a way to show it on YouTube or by a link. People also corrected the other people's work butt in a (usually) friendly way, so that the Blogger didn't feel embarrassed of having made an error!!

Tamara's Reflection Post

Few months ago we started doing Blogs on www.blogger.com I think that this blog project was useful for the people who were absent. I also liked doing the blog, because you could make it with a lot of colors, pictures. But it was also hard. For example it was a little bit hard for me to finish doing the blog, about our science class, before four o'clock. My computer is slow, so I could not post the pictures and make my blog nicer - I was out of time. Other wise, I liked doing the blog.

Ghazaleh's reflection post

Really liked this assignment because we could see our homework from there, instead of MOODLE and when people give you a comment you can undersatnd what is wrong then for next time you can fix it. The things i did not like about blogger.com was that you waste a lot of time, but then you do something wrong then every think would be destroyed. And I think that blogging was not a waste of time because i enjoied everythings.

Ghazaleh

Indrashish reflection post

Hello,

Well for the most part I liked the project but at points such as writing the comment were kind of boring. Also the part that I had to do the post fourth last was AWESOME. Sometimes I found the blog stightly tedious but other times it was a whole lot of fun. Writing a specific kind of comment like a Major Comment and a Minor comment were really tedious especially the Major post. Then also I enjoyed the part when we took away some time in class to look at the blog.

Bye and have a nice summer.

Lara Reflection Post

I didn't really liked it because it was a lost
of timebecause I didn't really use it but it
was still kind of fun because you got to have fun whit the colors and pictures. It was annoying when the pictures didn't go where I want it to go.

Awesome Science Day

Today in class we had 5th graders joining middle school because it was shadow day. The 6th graders and 5th graders were in different groups together (made by teachers) in the scavenger hunt. In the scavenger hunt, for example, the 5th graders had to open our lockers, look on different assignments on moodle or make a comment to any scribe post written by a 6th grader. After the scavenger hunt, we got back to our normal class, science, and continued our lab, the paper airplane lab. In the airplane lab, we have to make any change to the paper airplane so that it can fly further. Our shadows (the 5th graders) got to make their own airplane too and got to test them. They also had to think of ways that the airplane would go further. For example the amounts of folds you make on your plane or adding the right amount of paperclips. The 6th graders didn’t really get to pay attension to our lab because we had to explain what we have done so far in science and we had to help them with the lab (some of them had no idea what to do). Today we had a fun day in science (like always), and all of our shdows enjoyed it too (I hope).

Get ready for tommorow 6th graders, another shadow day with the other half of the 5th grade class.

THE NEXT SCRIBE IS.................................TAMARA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone who reads my post now! I hope that you will enjoy reading it!
Today our science class with Ms.D's words: "Hello everyone! You know what to do!". So everyone started working on our 'airplane lab'. We had to work on the following pages: 'number of wingtips', 'number of folds', and then we had to create our own purpose. So we had to test the airplanes (by throwing them), in the hallway.
The first thing we did was that we had to answer the IV (independent variables), and the DV (dependent variable). Then we had to write our hypothesis. After throwing the airplane from the 'start line', we had to take the meter sticks and measure the distance traveled. And after measuring, we had to record the distance traveled in our 'lab directions sheet' , that Ms. D gave us and you can find these sheets after going to our school website: www.aisz.hr.
THE NEXT SCRIBE POST IS.... NO ONE!

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Hi to everybody,

Last class two main things happened:
ONE was that we continued our lab (as you can see here there are some pictures of the students during the activity, and a way to fold paper airplanes) our lab is about how changing the differenet parts of a paper airplane (IV) effect the final result which would be the length flown (also called the DV).
Most of us arrived to the second test which is the amount of folds on the airplane. F-or the first one, it was how many paper clips had been added on the airplane( first two, then four, and then six).
For each test we had to try it three times and then we made an average, to which, we made observations (it crashed in the wall, or it hit someone) so we could then draw a conclusion!
For the second one instead, we had to decide how many folds there would be and then the rest was the same.
IF one of you lost the sheet here is the link to moodle in case you need to print it out: http://zagreb.ceesa.net/course/view.php?id=107
The SECOND thing we did was we talked about the 5th grade class SHADOW DAY!!!
This is mostly for the 6th graders since it will be them who will have to show and introduce the 5th graders to MIDDLE SCHOOL!
We will have this shadow day twice, since their class was to big they will be split in two groups, one will go on Wednesday and one on Thursday. They will be assigned one or two 6th graders and our class will have to go around and have their normal classes with them, except that, after lunch the 5th grade will go back to their classroom and 6th grade will have their normal routine.
The 6th grade drama students won't be here during Wednesday lunch so their buddies will have to eat lunch with their other friends.
Some of the things 5th graders will do with 6th grade is they will have a SCAVENGER HUNT!! They will get some clues and will have to follow those to be able to have all the teachers sign a not to win the scavenger hunt!
Another thing that will be done is that the 5th grade will try opening the 6th grade lockers and will learn better about moodle. Hope you all enjoy shadow day!
That is mostly all about what happened on Monday's class......
THE NEXT SCRIBE IS JAKUB!!!! (Hope you enjoy)

THE LAB BEGINS

Hey guys,

Today we finally started the new lab. This being the biggest lab we have done is making everyone very tense. This lab is called the "Paper Airplane Final Lab". Today we just started the work. We all were put into groups of four. All the groups made a start line with masking tape and markers. Then we continued and all the teams made marks for ten meters. Then we went inside and wrote down the IV, DV, and the hypothesis. Then whoever was done with this went back outside for testing their plane for the first test. Only certain people made it to the testing. After that we were dismissed and went off to Social Studies.

Your Welcome Davide :)

Science Class May 19

In Class we did Independent Variables, and Dependent Variables, Controlled Variables, and Uncontrolled Variables. Iv's, Dv's, Cv's, And Uv's.

A Independent Variable: Is the change in an Experiment.
For Example: Changing Tail-Gate up or down, or the amount
A Dependent Variable: Is the things I Observe in an Experiment
For Example: Measurements at the end, or Conclusion
A Controlled Variable: Is What I keep the same in An experiment
For Example: ALWAYS the same Scientist, and or other things like same Ruler
A Uncontrolled Variable: Is errors, or unexpected things that could have gone wrong.
For Example: Like Weather or Human error's.

After we did that we Began our new lab with airplanes... You can find the packet for this lab at (zagreb.ceesa.net) Requires Login...
If you want to make an Airplane similar to the one we are using in class below are the instructions...
Directions for Making a Basic Paper Airplane

1. Start with an A4 piece of paper.
2. Fold the paper in half length-wise. (You should end up with a long narrow piece of paper.)
3. Open the paper again.
4. Take one corner and fold it towards the middle. (The folded triangle should be a right isosceles triangle).
5. Do the same thing with the other corner.
6. Fold the airplane in half along the fold you made in Step #2.
7. Take one edge that is parallel to the fold you made in Step #2 and fold it down so it meets this fold. (This makes the wings!)
8. Do the same thing on the other side.
9. Add two paperclips to the bottom of the airplane.

We made a few of these in Class and through them in the hallway..

Some of our throwing pictures are at the top..

**** Extra Credit Opportunity - due Friday, May 28th at 1600 - watch a Myth Busters episode of your choice - in an email to Ms. D. (dani.dipietro@aisz.hror ddipietro.aisz@gmail.com) you need to list the Purpose Question, your hypothesis, the IV, DV, 5 - cvs, 5- uvs, and whether its been Busted/Plausible/Confirmed and why!****

Variables

Hey readers!! Today in science class, we discussed VARIABLES and how to conduct aFAIR TEST!!! First of all, a fair test is a test that is re-tested three times to make sure that it is right, and in each of the times that you re-test it, you can only change one variable. Most of you readers, at this point, might be asking yourselves: "What the heck is a variable???" Well, a variable is anything that the scientist can change in order to conduct a fair test. There are many different types of variables:

Independent Variable (IV) which is anything the scientist testing the experiment can change,

Dependent Variable(DV) which is what the scientist measures and the actual result,

Controlled Variable (cv) which are all of the things a scientist needs to keep the same, and

Uncontrolled Variable (uv) which are all of the errors that the scientist can have made during the testing.

We watched again a Myth Busters episode were they made an experiment on trucks: do they go farther with the tailgate up or down? First, we needed to write a hypothesis on which truck we thought would go farther: the truck with the tailgate up or the truck with the tailgate down. We figured out that the truck with the tailgate up went farther, since the wind got blocked into the back of the truck, forming a "circle", so the wind coming from the top of the truck didn't fall on the truck, not provoking a drag. Instead, in the truck with the tailgate down, the was no "circle" in the back of the truck, which made the wind fall on the tailgate, provoking a big time drag. After the Myth Busters, we all answered some practice questions for a variables sheet.

Also, for the sixth grade readers, our only homework is (of course) the blog, and the lab!!!

Next scribe is...........DUNCAN!!!!!!

P.S. I couldn't find the exact video we watched in class, but here is the Myth Buster's second try for the same experiment, since the fans complained about their science not being accurate......enjoy!!
